Blue skies greeted 60 bowlers to Bungay Bowls Club to compete for the President's Shield, sponsored by Wightman's.

Divided into two groups of 10 triples, each played three qualifying matches to determine the grand and third-place final.

Just two triples won their opening two matches in the first qualifying group. The Oulton Broad triple of Alan Buck, Don and Yvonne Brealey won their last game to assure themselves a finals place with three wins and an impressive shot difference of 25.

The Bungay pair of April and Peter Nunn, playing with Mettingham's George Howes, were looking good for the runners-up position as on the final end skip April's first wood brought the jack back for three shots and placed her triple in a good position to make it three wins out of three. However, their opposing skip Dennis Francis from Brampton had other ideas and draw shot wood which April could not dislodge. This defeat left two other teams with two wins each after the three qualifying games. Due to a their superior shot difference of 15 the Lowestoft Railway triple of Charles and Margaret Clark playing with Monica Beaumont claimed second position and a place in the third place final.

The other qualification group was dominated by two triples who were the only ones to win all three matches. Topping the group for a third consecutive year with a comfortable shot difference of 23 were the Leiston duo of Grenville Wright and Mick Battle, playing with Bungay's Jack Newnham. Second in group and heading for the third place final were David Betts (Stantiforth), Geoff Randle (Attleborough) and Pauline Wright (Muntford) with a shot difference of 13.

In a low scoring third place final the David Betts' skipped triple picked up four singles on the first four ends and cemented a small lead with a double on the sixth and a single on the ninth and penultimate end to edge third place by 7 shots to 4 over the Charles Clarke skipped triple.

Grenville Wright's defending triple lost the first end to Alan Buck's triple but regained their composure to lead 6-2 after the seventh end. With Alan's triple not playing particularly well on long cots the eighth end proved crucial to the outcome of the final. Playing to an almost maximum cot length Grenville's middle Jack Newnham, drew the cot back closer to the ditch to hold three shots. While Alan's attempts to win the shot back ended with his three woods going into the ditch, Grenville's three woods all counted as shots to win six shots on the end and take a 12-6 lead. Alan's triple fought hard over the two remaining ends but only gained three shots as the President's Shield title went to Grenville's triple for a third consecutive time.
