Norfolk's Andrew Marshall is facing an uphill battle to make the cut after a poor finish to his opening round in the Joburg Open.

The Dereham professional, looking to make the most of a rare appearance on the European Tour, was well placed on two under par after completing 14 holes.

But then consecutive double bogeys wrecked all the good work and although a birdie at the 17th repaired some of the damage an opening round of 73 left him all the way down in a tie for 141st going into today's second round.

Marshall will now need to shoot well under par to be around for the weekend in an event that has a 200-plus field and is being played over two courses.

South African Richard Sterne and Germany's Maximilian Kieffer led the way after the opening day.

The pair shot first-round 63s to sit together on eight under par at the top of the leaderboard, with Kieffer pegging Sterne back after the home favourite had raced off after being among the early starters.

• Roger Brooks, this year's captain at Bawburgh Golf Club, has chosen Break as his charity. He has already started a 100 Club with 127 members so far and hopes to reach 140.

He is planning a horse racing evening later in the year and a whole raft of activities on his captain's day. But perhaps his most audacious challenge of his year will be a sky dive.
