Point sees City confirm second spot

MEN'S EAST LEAGUE: Norwich City ensured a second place finish in the Premier B division when they returned from relegated Pelicans with a hard-fought 3-3 draw.

Already promoted because third-placed Cambridge University are ineligible to go up, City started poorly and had keeper Leonard to thank for keeping the scores level early on. Horn, Hammond and Anthony then had chances for the visitors but their final touch was missing.

Pelicans broke the deadlock at the end of the first half but Norwich equalised early in the second when Wardle engineered a short corner and from a simple one-two Perry dispatched the ball past the keeper.

Pelicans then had their influential sweeper sent off and Norwich took advantage when Elliott converted a rebound after the keeper made a good save. Pelicans swifly levelled but with eight minutes to go Sibson thought he had won the game for Norwich from a short corner.

City’s exuberance soon disappeared however when a big aerial ball eluded all and an unmarked King’s Lynn forward ran on to the ball and poked it into the net.

The draw took City five points clear of Cambridge University II, who lost at 3-1 at Harleston Magpies II, with the students still having one game to play.

Dereham signed off their championship-winning season with an impressive 6-1 victory at Harpenden. Having tied the league up two weeks early, they were able to experiment with the team and positions, and it turned out to be a positive move. Matt Turner was brought into the side to make his debut at 15 and impressed on the left wing. Centre back Mark Hunter was allowed a chance as centre forward, and took his chance by securing his first hat-trick for Dereham.

Dereham opened the scoring with Hunter’s first, a drag flick high into the right hand corner. Will Edwards then set up the second goal for Chris Vernon, who showed great composure in front of goal to slot home his ninth of the season.

Harpenden managed to get back into the game briefly in the second half with a deflected shot, but Dereham once again showed their dominance.

Richard Stainthorpe added a third following a slick move involving Edwards and Hunter and doubled his tally when he pounced on a loose ball at the top of the D and unleashed a rasping shot.

All that was left was for Hunter to complete his hat-trick with two well-worked goals.

In Division 2NE Norwich City II drew 3-3 with Ipswich and East Suffolk (Tom Hindle 2, Matt Brine) to finish the season in third position, while Norwich Dragons were beaten 5-3 at home by champions March.

Norwich City IV secured a second place finish in 5NE by beating UEA III 4-1, with Sam Matthews scoring two of the goals and Jamie Horsley and Al Paterson also on target.

In Division 5NE Norwich Dragons III lost 3-2 at home to Norwich City VI. Alan Quinton and Mike Banham scored for Dragons while David Broadway (2) and Steve Meek were on target for City.
