England Under-19s skipper Olly Stone was named man of the series after his side slipped to a 67-run defeat against South Africa in the second Youth Test yesterday.

Stone, from Brundall, took an impressive 17 wickets in the two matches, including 11 for 79 in the second game – the best ever match figures by an England bowler in a Youth Test.

After leading England to victory in the first Test at Cape Town, his incredible effort with the ball was not quite enough at Paarl yesterday as England narrowly failed to bat out the final day to secure a draw.

Having been set a victory target of 318, England resumed on the final morning on 31 without loss.

First innings centurion Dominic Sibley was the only wicket to fall in the morning session as England reached lunch on 121, raising hopes of an unlikely victory.

But after the dismissal of Harry Finch for 46, England lost regular wickets and it became a matter of trying to bat out the remaining overs.

Opener Jonathan Tattersall fell for 63, but a seventh wicket stand of 49 between Ed Barnard and Miles Hammond put the tourists back on course for a draw and a 1-0 series victory.

After Barnard went for 28, Stone arrived at the crease to face the new ball, but he lasted just two deliveries before edging behind to paceman Kagiso Rabada.

Left arm spinner Michael Faasen then claimed the key wicket of Hammond, for 26, and England's resistance was ended with 14.4 overs remaining.

England will now turn their attention to the limited overs game, with five One-Day Youth Internationals against South Africa U19s, starting at Paarl next Wednesday. Before then, they have a one-day warm-up match against a South African Invitation XI, at Franschhoek, on Sunday.
