Phoenix FC – champions of Division 2B – completed a fine league and cup double when they lifted the Norfolk Sunday Intermediate Cup.

Phoenix were 5-2 winners over old rivals Trimingham Pilgrims on a glorious sunny morning at the FDC in Bowthorpe.

Pilgrims took the lead on 25 minutes when Jack Crane scored from close range, but Phoenix were level soon after when Matty Doyle finished a good move which he had started.

Almost immediately, Phoenix went ahead after a great run and finish by Jamie Smith, and before half-time Charlie Lambe lobbed the keeper to add a third. After the break Crane scored his second to reduce the arrears and Trimingham had chances to level the scores, but a bullet header from Smith restored the two-goal cushion for Phoenix.

Try as they might, Pilgrims continued to make, but fail to take, chances and as the game drew to a close Phoenix completed the scoring, with Scott Starling on hand to fire home the rebound after Pilgrims keeper Lee Brown had made a good penalty stop.

In a game where both sides were a credit to the Norwich and District Sunday League, Phoenix deserved the victory, but the margin may be a tad harsh on Trimingham.

The battle for the Premier Division shows no sign of relenting. Leaders Schoolhouse travelled to Suffolk to face Bungay Town and thanks to goals from Chris Hall (2), Tim Henery, Brendan Burke, Elliot Lythgoe and Rhys Logan, came back with a 6-2 victory. This was a good win against a Bungay side that were beaten 1-0 by Riverside Rovers in midweek courtesy of a penalty 20 minutes from time. Rovers themselves still harbour hopes of completing the treble as they won 3-1 at third-placed Acle Rangers. Jordan Rocastle netted twice and there was a goal for Shaun Wones as Rovers remained two points behind the leaders with a game in hand. They still have to meet as well – and what a game that could be.

Matty Elwin (2), Ryan Cook, Dan Cook, Jonny Causton and Tom Pitchell all scored for Poringland Wanderers as they moved into fifth after scoring six without reply against Aslacton, whilst bottom side Norman Wanderers recorded their third win of the season as Tom Jenkins (2), Nicky May, Steve Buxton and Ross Joy all scored in a 5-3 win over The PoW.

In 1A, Costessey West End's 3-1 home win over New Buckenham, thanks to a Ricky Ward hat-trick, leaves them requiring two points from two games to reach the Division One play-off final. Bungay Town Reserves were also winners, beating Windmill Wanderers 3-0.

Champions Mad Moose finished the 2A season with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of third-placed The Middle Green, who scored the winner in the final minute courtesy of a terrific Jacob Skinner free-kick that gave the keeper no chance. Sam Brookes was also on target for Middle Green.

Hethersett Athletic completed their 2B season with a 4-0 win at home to Briston Wanderers. Liam Buffin scored all four goals for the hosts.

After winning 5-2 (Kane Wetteland 2, Jack Hurrell, Lawrence Hare and Lewis McKerell) at Barracks FC, Norwich Ceyms now know that a win at home to Sprowston Athletic this week will see them take the 3B title. Sprowston themselves are pushing for third spot and are firm favourites to do it after a 4-1 home win over Blofield United. Hethersett Athletic Reserves won 3-1 at Gressenhall.

In the Benevolent Cup, Sprowston Wanderers reached the final after winning 5-4 at Constable Crusaders whilst William Wanderers were 2-0 (Matt Daynes, Liam Brown) winners at Vale Longo. Marlborough FC confirmed their place in the final with a 3-0 win at Salhouse Rovers, whilst Revolution FC hit eight without reply against Hellesdon U19s.
