Barry Pinches saw off son, Luke, to book his place in the third round of Q-School Event One at Burton’s Meadowside centre yesterday.

Barry had been dreading coming up against Luke, 17, since they were paired together after he disposed of Dean Goddard in the first round on Monday whilst the youngster had a bye.

But Barry managed to put sentiment aside to win 4-1 in a scrappy affair with neither player making a break of over 50.

Barry took the first frame 60-2 before being pushed close in the second and emerging the winner (86-56). Luke took the third frame to make it 2-1 (48-66) before Barry managed to close out the remaining two frames (72-2 and 63-19).

Barry will now head into the third round with his opponent yet to be determined and the 47-year-old must win four more matches to win one of the two-year tour cards on offer. Luke will now regroup and hope to bounce back in Event Two, which starts on Sunday when he faces Chen Zhe in the first round.
