Norwich heavyweight Sam Sexton overcame a bad cut to record a vital victory at York Hall, Bethnal Green, late on Friday night.
The 27-year-old is desperate to get back in contention for a domestic title and the clash with Larry 'The War Machine' Olubamiwo was being billed as a winner takes all – with nothing for the beaten man.
Sexton looked to be in control during the early rounds, but his hopes suffered a setback when he suffered a cut in the fourth round after a clash of heads between the fighters.
With the injury worsening the referee's card was consulted after the bout was halted – and Sexton was awarded the verdict 49-48 on a five-round technical decision.
Victory takes Sexton's record to 15 wins and two defeats on 17 outings.
