Norwich Dragons Ladies facing uphill battle to avoid relegation
PUBLISHED: 09:03 13 February 2018
Norwich Dragons slipped deeper into the Premier Division relegation mire at the weekend after losing twice in two days.
The only Norfolk team in the top flight were beaten 3-2 at home by West Herts on Saturday and then went down 3-0 at leaders Ipswich to remain third from bottom in the table, with four teams going down.
The Dragons are now eight points adrift of the safety mark, with just one game in hand, and need all three points at already relegated Old Loughtonians next Saturday to retain a realistic chance of staying up.
The team had high hopes of getting something out of their home fixture but goals from Emma Tabrett and Stacey Lee were not enough as they slid to a narrow home defeat, with Sophie Mullan being named player-of-the-match.
It was always going to be a big ask at Ipswich and Dragons returned home well beaten but far from disgraced, with Carmel Windsor Waite and Olivia Thomas the joint players of the match.
Harleston Magpies II were made to work hard to maintain their perfect record in Division 1N, sneaking home 1-0 at their nearest rivals Bedford II.
That was a perfect result for Norwich City, who thumped UEA 5-0 at Taverham to move within a point of second place. Felicity Williams scored twice for City while Olivia Williams, Krystal Bishop and Alice Gill were also on target.
The emphatic win featured great runs, interceptions and skills from all the players.
It was an excellent weekend for City who also won 2-1 at Loughborough Students in the EH Cup with goals from Olivia Williams and Pui Foung Chung earning the visitors a place in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere in Division 1N Dereham drew 1-1 at Wisbech while Watton had an excellent 5-0 win over fellow strugglers St Ives.
Norwich Dragons II moved up to third in Division 2NE after recovering from a 1-0 half-time deficit to beat North Norfolk 3-2 at Cromer, with the goals coming from Kate McKenna, Jess Bennett and Harriet Green and Kiera Goymour the player-of-the-match.
Fellow promotion-chasers Norwich City II went down 5-3 at Bury St Edmunds (Hannah Bush, Hannah Jarvis, Leigh-Ann Worrall).
