Wigan boss Paul Cook has suggested Norwich City winger Yanic Wildschut could return to the Latics, following reports of a loan deal being possible.
The Dutch winger is thought to still be out of favour under Canaries head coach Daniel Farke, having been loaned out to Cardiff for the second half of last season.
Wigan have been linked with moves to bring former fan favourites Wildschut and Callum McManaman back to the DW Stadium following their promotion back to the Championship.
“These markets are what they are,” Cook said when asked about transfer targets by the Wigan Post. “Our fans will appreciate we want to make them happy, and make signings that are going to excite us all.
“As a manager, it’s pointless to just be bringing in five players saying ‘we’re all right’.
“The lads you’ve spoken about there (Wildschut and McManaman), are both still held in very high regard here in Wigan.
“Are we after them? We’re after all good players.
“Can we get them over the line? That remains to be seen.
“But we’ll certainly be doing our best to make our fans happy.”
Norwich City transfer rumours: Wigan keen to sign Wildschut on loan
Wildschut was a deadline day signing of former City manager Alex Neil’s back in January 2017 but has gone on to score just twice in 29 games.
That followed an impressive spell with Wigan, scoring seven goals to help the Latics earn promotion from the third tier in 2016, earning a £4million which could potentially have risen to £7m.
The 26-year-old scored once in 20 games under Farke last season – the winner in a 1-0 success at Sheffield United in September – before joining Cardiff.
Ten appearances followed for Neil Warnock’s promotion chasing team but just three were starts in a largely unsuccessful spell, with the Bluebirds not interested in taking the former Middlesbrough man with them on their Premier League adventure.
The Post reported recently that the Latics would be willing to cover a ‘sizeable chunk’ of Wildschut’s wages in a loan deal, although the Dutchman has been at Colney for pre-season training with City in recent weeks.
The wide man has a year remaining on his contract, although City retain the option of a further 12 months.
