Norwich City slipped to a 1-0 friendly defeat on their 80th anniversary celebrations at Carrow Road on Tuesday night against impressive Premier League rivals West Ham.

The Canaries were indebted to John Ruddy during a second half barrage after Ricky van Wolfswinkel had spurned the best chance before the interval for Alex Neil's men.

But City were undone in the 82nd minute when Harry Toffolo deflected a cross into his own net after Ruddy and Vadis Odjidja had failed to clear at their near post.

Neil shuffled his pack as he had promised for two Carrow Road friendlies designed to fine tune his plans for Crystal Palace's opening day Premier League visit. Seb Bassong and Russell Martin dropped out of the squad with Youssouf Mulumbu and Lewis Grabban also earning the night off after their goalscoring exploits last weekend against FC Augsburg.

Neil named a youthful substitutes' bench which included both Murphy twins, Jamar Loza and Conor McGrandles.

West Ham started far brighter than the Canaries, much to Neil's clear disgust, with Odjidja's slip almost punished by Morgan Amalfitano.

Diafra Sakho was cleaned out by former Hammer and City captain for the night Gary O'Neil but the free kick came to nothing after prolonged treatment.

Van Wolfswinkel was crowded out with the home crowd urging the Dutchman to open his account at Carrow Road for the new season before Ryan Bennett's header was cleared by the Hammers.

City's home support broke into applause in the 10th minute to mark the time of the first-ever competitive goal scored by the Canaries 80 years ago on this landmark occasion.

Matt Jarvis clipped van Wolfswinkel which triggered a swift free kick but the striker was adjudged to have strayed offside before Adrian saved low to his left.

Van Wolfswinkel was never far from the action in the opening quarter with a miscued header from Elliott Bennett's cross.

Sakho clipped a low centre dangerously across the face of Ruddy's six-yard box but Ryan Bennett was on hand, before the keeper was perfectly positioned to gather Modibo Maiga's near post header.

Andreu produced City's best moment of the friendly so far in the 28th minute with an instinctive turn and hit in one flowing motion that forced Adrian to push away.

Daniel Henry denied van Wolfswinkel with a last-ditch tackle after the striker appeared set to latch onto O'Neil's cushioned pass.

Matt Jarvis squandered a chance to test Ruddy at the opposite end when City were undermanned at the far post but the former England international paid for a heavy touch.

Maiga's cute turn left Alex Tettey stranded but the striker choked his shot. City should have opened the scoring in the final seconds of the opening period and, predictably, van Wolfswinkel was a central character when he beat the Hammers' offside trap but his attempted low, guided finish clipped Adrian's left foot six yards out.

Neil made two changes at the half-time interval with Jonny Howson and Nathan Redmond replacing Tettey and Andreu respectively.

Van Wolfswinkel was prominent again twice shortly after the restart with a slip proving costly inside the six-yard box before a sharp sidefoot under pressure drifted wide.

Redmond underlined his attacking threat in the 50th minute with a sweet turn to embarrass Lewis Page before advancing 20 yards and slamming into the side netting.

Ruddy kept City level a minute later with a smart parry to foil Jarvis at his near post before the midfielder sliced his follow-up wide.

The experienced Kevin Nolan then lashed over off-balance after a wonderfully probing cross down the left from Jarvis.

Slaven Bilic introduced nine changes in one tranche a minute after the hour mark with clearly one eye on the Hammers' Europa League tie later this week. Only Keeper Adrian and central defender James Tomkins survived the cull.

Ruddy tipped Angelo Ogbonna's goalbound low shot around his post with the Hammers' second string seemingly quickly into their collective stride.

Elliott Bennett's swerving long range hit in the 69th minute was flying inside the post before veering wide in the final seconds to brush Adrian's side netting with both clubs still pressing for that breakthrough.

Ruddy was the last line of defence again with a top drawer double stop at point blank range foiling Enner Valencia after City were unable to cut out the initial probing cross.

The redoubtable Ruddy then frustrated Mauro Zarate who was the latest casting a glance skywards after the Norwich keeper's defiance at his near post.

Josh Murphy replaced Hooper for the final 12 minutes as Neil looked to stem the tide and van Wolfswinkel's looping header required evasive action from Adrian to tip over his bar.

West Ham's weight of pressure finally told in the 82nd minute but the concession owed much to Norwich's defensive mix up with Ruddy and Odjidja clearly leaving the cross for each other and the luckless Toffolo inadvertently diverting it over his own line four yards out, with Reece Oxford in close attendance.
