Rumours that former first-team coach Steve Foley is set for a shock return to Norwich City appear to have been premature.

Earlier today news broke that Foley could be joining the backroom team of Neil Adams, who was confirmed as the Canaries' permanent manager on Thursday night after signing a new three-year deal.

Foley left Norwich in 2006 after 10 years as a coach at Carrow Road under several managers, and most recently has been working at Ipswich Town's youth academy alongside director Bryan Klug, coaching across their age groups as well as coaching the coaches too.

He has also been head coach at Ryman League Division One North outfit Needham Market, taking every training session and taking in all their games.

But a statement on Needham Market's website has since been posted this afternoon saying: 'The earlier report of Steve leaving the club has turned out to be incorrect and he will continue in his role as head coach. No further comment will be made on the subject.'

The 60-year-old knows Adams well from his time as a player. He has also been in frequent communication with Adams and fellow City academy coach Darren Huckerby, through his work at City's Suffolk rivals.

Speaking last month, Foley said he still 'won't have a bad word said' about City despite his exit and had hoped Adams could steer the club to Premier League safety.

'He's a good lad is Neil,' Foley added. 'He was always a thoughtful player but my biggest memory of him was always taking a bag of balls at the end of training and practicing penalties, which he had a very good scoring record of.

'If he takes that some sort of bravery into management then he will do well. Without being horrible, he's not really got anything to lose, because if they do go down, everyone will still blame Chris (Hughton) anyway.'

While Adams has been unveiled, it remains to be seen who will make up his backroom team for next season. Mark Robson and Paul Nevin were alongside Adams in the dugout for the final five games of Norwich's Premier League campaign that ultimately ended in relegation.

City are also expected to appoint a new technical director in the coming weeks.
