It may have been a disappointing season for Norwich City players, but a few ex-Canaries are enjoying their extended campaigns, thanks to the play-offs.

A clutch of players who once wore the yellow and green are involved in the end-of-season shoot-outs – with varying degrees of success.

Perhaps the most high-profile – and if a recent Tweet is to be taken in a certain way, the one with most reason to relish crossing City on their way down – is Gary Hooper.

The 28-year-old left Carrow Road for Sheffield Wednesday in January after a frustrating two and a half years, and has helped fire the Owls into a play-off final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.

'It was a big call for me getting out of Norwich and coming down to the Championship,' said Hooper who tweeted after Norwich's relegation was confirmed 'what a shame' with no explanation of his actual sentiment.

'I needed to get out because I wasn't playing. I need to play and this has helped me score more goals and hopefully get promotion.

'We have one more game. We are not promoted yet.

'I'm very confident that we can do well. As soon as I signed I knew that Wednesday would be able to reach the play-offs.

'We haven't been out of the top six for a long time and now we go to Wembley looking to finish the job.'

Wednesday centre-half Michael Turner – who is on loan from Norwich City – didn't feature in the semi-final wins over Brighton – managed by former Norwich boss Chris Hughton.

Brighton's performances under Hughton – particularly their goals – have come as something of a surprise to some Canaries fans, who tired of the one-time Republic of Ireland international's dull tactics.

The Norwich link continues into the final – Hull are managed by ex-City defender Steve Bruce and include Robert Snodgrass, sold by City to the Tigers for more than £6m two years ago.

Bruce has been there before - in 2002 he was manager of the Birmingham team which beat Norwich City in a shoot-out at the Millennium Stadium.

Among the other play-off losers, Derby County, were defender Jason Shackell, striker Chris Martin and midfielders Bradley Johnson and Jacob Butterfield.

Steve Morison will be hoping for an appearance at Carrow Road next season, but will need his Millwall team to beat Barnsley in Sunday's League One play-off final. Morison has scored 15 league goals for Millwall this season. He left Carrow Road in January, 2013 in a swap deal which saw Luciano Becchio head to Norwich: it's fair to say Leeds got the better of the deal, even though Morison's time at Elland Road wasn't as prolific as he had hoped – he scored five league goals in 30 starts compared to Becchio's record of just two league starts and no senior goals.

Barnsley are managed by Paul Heckingbottom – in his second spell as caretaker. The 38-year-old was signed by then City boss Nigel Worthington in 2002, but after just seven starts his contract was ripped up after a year.

AFC Wimbledon face Plymouth in the League Two play-off on Monday – but George Francomb will have a watching brief only.

The winger has had knee surgery, which ruled him out of the play-off campaign.

Francomb came through the ranks at Carrow Road, but never quite cracked it: he made two league starts but after loans spells at Barnet, Hibs and AFC Wimbledon, he joined the Dons three years ago.

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley said: 'He's had a little tear in his meniscus. We tried everything we could to get him right but he might need an operation now, so that's a bit of a blow.'
