Headlines such as 'The Canaries can't be caged anymore!' and 'In goalless times only hoping for a miracle helps' greeted readers in Germany following the defeats for Bayern.

The defeats are not much of a worry for Bayern 20 years on, they are the current European champions after beating German rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley in May.

Klaus Hoeltzenbein was a reporter on both legs in 1993 for Munich-based broadsheet newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Looking back on the matches, Mr Hoeltzenbein, said: 'It was a shock, but not as big a shock as it would be today if a similar result were to happen. Bayern Munich had a team with famous players during that time, but were not really good in October 1993. Look at the statistics; two years before they lost in the European Cup against FC Copenhagen.

'One year before they hadn't even qualified for Europe. They did not dominate in the early 90s. They tried, they invested a lot, but they failed. And It was not like today, like the enormous 3-1 win of a few weeks ago against Manchester City.'

Mr Hoeltzenbein said that between 1965 and 1993 German teams played 32 games against English clubs, winning just once. He added: 'The shock was the defeat in Munich; two chances for Norwich, two perfect goals. The two goals in Munich were extraordinary and typical. I wrote in 1993 in the report for the newspaper: 'The Munich players have been overwhelmed about the demonstration of classical British soccer culture. The evolution of kick-and-rush to a higher game culture. The Munich stars were shocked'.'

'For Bayern Munich it is always hard to believe that any team could be better than they are. That is the self-confidence of the club. And they even thought after the Norwich games that they were the better team. Canaries? Who could lose against birds?

'But they did not bring it on the pitch.

'They had problems with the coach and two months after the Norwich disaster they sacked Erich Ribbeck.'
