Norwich City's injury crisis is made even more frustrating because they are top, unbeaten in 10 games and believe they are yet to fulfil their potential, according to midfield stalwart Alex Tettey.

The Canaries were without 13 players for Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with Coventry, including Emi Buendia serving a one-game ban, but it was only an equaliser in the 89th minute which denied an eighth win in 10 matches.

Tettey joked: “I need to be careful, we’ve just played 14 games! But yes in this league, the squad that we have when everybody is fit, is just madness – because you could actually have two teams playing in the Championship and they will do well.

“Fingers crossed we get everyone back and there is enough games for everyone to show what they can do and help the team to progress.”

Teemu Pukki and Lukas Rupp are hoping to return from minor hamstring strains for the game at Luton on Wednesday, when Buendia is set to return as well, but Max Aarons looks to have joined the casualty list after leaving Carrow Road on crutches to protect a shin injury.

One of the few players who has so far managed to avoid injury is Tottenham loanee Oliver Skipp, with 34-year-old Tettey mentoring his fellow defensive midfielder.

“I tell you what, to be 20 and to be played in that role, how he’s done it and the maturity of his game, it’s just amazing, I must say,” said the former Norway international.

“A top, top player, a good guy, I’ve been very impressed. Hopefully he continues because he’s a player that we definitely need to be fit and playing well.”

Tettey signed a one-year deal to take him into a ninth season with the Canaries so was expecting to be playing the role of elder statesman but has been needed to start the last two games, with Rupp and Kenny McLean out injured.

“When you are 34 or 35 and going into a season and you are playing in a good team, of course you know you’re not going to be the first guy on the team sheet,” said the former Rennes and Rosenborg battler.

“When you have top young players and they are always going to play, you know as a player that you have to accept it, to back them.

“There’s never been one slight complaint from me when I’m not playing because they are very good enough to play and have to play.

“So I’m just happy to be around and whenever I’m needed I try to help the team.”
