Marco Stiepermann was grinning from ear to ear and with a celebratory beer in his hand as he described the ‘unbelievable feeling’ of sealing promotion with Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The German midfielder scored his 10th goal of the season to set the Canaries on their way to a 2-1 home win over Blackburn on Saturday night which ensured third-placed Leeds cannot catch them.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling at the moment, even more maybe tomorrow to realise what really happened today,” Stiepermann said with a relieved smile.

“To be honest, the pressure was high for all of us because we knew if we won or got a point we were going to be in the Premier League but it was an unbelievable game for us and also a good atmosphere again.

“Now we can just feel how the pressure went away, it’s unbelievable.”

City need a point at Aston Villa next Sunday to seal the Championship title now, unless Sheffield United drop points at Stoke, and the 28-year-old admits he hadn’t considered promotion might be achievable this season.

“To be honest no, but I know how football works and how ugly football can be but also how good football can be,” he said, when asked if he’d thought promotion might be possible last summer.

“Obviously we showed how good we can be this season – and how good I can be in the position where I play. I’m absolutely buzzing.”

Stiepermann also praised the united spirit within the Canaries squad during their pursuit of the Premier League.

“I think it was special this season,” he added, as City players buzzed around the media zone still basking in the glory of a first Carrow Road promotion for the club since 1960.

“Especially for players who are not that much involved in the starting line-up, I never got the feeling that players who were not playing too much were jealous or anything to play games.

“I think that was one of the keys to why we’ve got promoted.”
