Reading boss Brian McDermott is confident his side will soon stop throwing away leads as they go in search of their first Premier League win of the season against the Canaries.

The Royals are 18th in the table and are yet to register a victory since their return to the top flight, despite taking the lead in five of their nine league outings so far.

Reading were pegged back yet again last weekend after taking the lead at fellow strugglers QPR, but McDermott insists that precious win will come as they look to avert a swift return to the Football League.

'This is the Premier League, you don't expect to go 1-0 up and everybody to go 'oh ok the game's over' it isn't like that,' said McDermott. 'It isn't necessarily concentration that is the problem, I've been through situations; when I first took the job we were drawing an awful lot of games and couldn't win.

'I've been through situations where we couldn't score a goal in the first-half, 18 games I think last season where we couldn't score in the first half. I've been in situations where we have conceded late goals and we have always addressed it. We have always tried to address things and it is the same now, once we get in front we want to address that situation - once we get in front we want to keep a clean sheet and win the game and that is another challenge.'

Clean sheets have also proved elusive this season with the Berkshire club not managing to keep their opponents at bay in any competition to date and McDermott is keen to improve on that statistic.

'Well we would definitely like to keep clean sheets, obviously every team would like to keep clean sheets and we are no different,' he said. 'Last year we kept a load of clean sheets so that is something we really need to be working on – we went in front again the other day against QPR and unfortunately they got a 60-odd minute goal and that is something we need to do, we need to keep clean sheets and we have worked on that and will be working on that.'

Despite not seeing his side pick up three points from a Premier League game after the latest episode at Loftus Road on Sunday, McDermott has been pleased with the attitude of his charges to the huge challenge of stepping up into the big time.

'Every performance has given me heart, bar Spurs (a 3-1 defeat),' he said. 'If you look at what has actually happened in the nine games in this league we have drawn five games and lost four. By definition if you have drawn five you could have won them, I definitely think of those five, three of them we should have won. You can't be selective in your choosing, every time we go out and play we are trying to win that particular game. It is not a target of 'this is this team, we are going to win it' that is disrespectful and I would definitely not do that.'

Reading's Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has reportedly told the media in his homeland that he has a list of 10 players he hopes to take to the Madejski during the January transfer window.

McDermott played down those reports and wants to keep focused on today's match with Norwich City, who he believes have started to find their form after a shaky start to the campaign.

'It is November, let's talk about November, let's talk about Norwich,' he said. 'You'd have to ask the owner about the 10 players, sometimes Anton might say something in Russia and it will get broadcast.

'What we wouldn't do and would never want to do is talk about players at other clubs.

'I watched them (Norwich) when they played Spurs at White Hart Lane and they played really well, I think they drew the game but they possibly could have won.

'They have just picked up and have got seven points from the last three games so we know that they are about and they will know what we are about, I'm just looking forward to the game now, I really am.'
