Preston sign Steven Smith from Norwich City

Norwich City defender Steven Smith has joined League One Preston North End in a one-year deal, with a further one-year option.

Smith arrived at Carrow Road from Rangers in a Bosman deal on July, 1, 2010 in a two-year deal.

After making seven appearances for the Canaries last season, Smith joined SPL side Aberdeen on loan from January for the rest of the campaign where he made 17 appearances.

Smith was reportedly at Deepdale in midweek to watch Preston's 3-2 Carling Cup win over Crewe ahead of a potential loan switch.

The 26-year-old was not included in any of City's pre-season warm-up action and was not issued with a Norwich squad number for the Premier League season.

Norwich City boss Paul Lambert confirmed at this morning's press conference that a deal was close: 'That isn't too far away from being concluded. Hopefully that will go through for Steven's sake because he needs to get back playing football.'
