• Manager

Sir Alex Ferguson Ferguson inches ever closer to an unprecedented half century of honours in the managerial game. Built a dynasty at Aberdeen to challenge the hegemony of the Old Firm with success both at home and abroad. Moved south to oversee a revolution at Old Trafford. Toppled Liverpool as England's most successful title winners with his 12th and United's 19th crown last season. Has won two Champions League titles and also guided the Reds to two more finals.

• One to watch

Paul Scholes

The 37-year-old has swiftly re-established himself at the heart of United's midfield after the decision to cut short premature retirement. Wonderful visionary passer with a marauding goalscoring threat in his pomp from central midfield. Part of a golden generation at Old Trafford that blossomed in a decade and more of sustained trophy-winning success. Scholes has ten Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions League wins on his CV.
