After Norwich City's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Middlesbrough last night, Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas tweeted that the 500 plus loyal fans who made the trip up north should be refunded.

The presenter, himself a Norwich City fan tweeted: 'Well done #Middlesbrough #flying Hope @NorwichCityFC refund the fans who turned up when their players didn't.'

Norwich City striker Cameron Jerome, who was on Middlesbrough's books as a youngster, acknowledged in a tweet that it was a 'shocking performance'. He said it was 'nowhere near good enough', before apologising to the 'loyal' fans who made the trip.

There is a precedent for a refund for Canaries fans who have travelled a long way only to head back home disappointed.

Norwich City's players decided to reimburse the Canaries supporters who travelled to South Wales to watch their side's dismal 3-0 defeat at Swansea City in March.

Club skipper Russell Martin revealed then the squad decided to make the gesture out of sympathy for the 899 paying City fans who winced their way through that Premier League defeat.

And, after last night's Championship capitulation, some supporters on Twitter agreed with Simon Thomas that there should be a similar gesture for the 554 fans who made the 220-mile journey to the Riverside stadium.

David Perrett (‏@daveperrett666) said: 'It's a nice surprise when the players offer, but it can't become a habit every time we play poorly. Fans take risks.'

And Jonathan Seager (‏@Seagermegadrive) said: '#ncfc fans asking for a refund after tonight...did they not go to any away games under hughton?!!'
