But few expected Alex Neil's Norwich City side to travel to Manchester United's Theatre of Dreams - where Sir Alex Ferguson saw so much success - and inflict a first home league defeat of the season on their hosts.

Goals from Cameron Jerome and Alex Tettey secured a 2-1 away win, and meant the Canaries won for the first time at The Theatre of Dreams since 1989, before Declan Rudd, Ryan Bennett, Nathan Redmond and Robbie Brady– who all started the game– were even born.

The victory sparked scenes of jubilation amongst the travelling army of supporters, with players and celebrities taking to social media to have their say on the remarkable result– which saw Norwich climb out of the relegation places.

Canaries Trust chairman Robin Sainty said he was treated to an 'amazing afternoon' with City fans all contributing to an 'incredible atmosphere'.

'When we scored it was complete mayhem, strangers were hugging each other and it was an absolutely incredible atmosphere,' he said.

'We went up for the weekend and I have never heard our fans make so much noise.

'It was great to experience it and we were not in a hurry to get out– there was plenty of singing to an empty stadium at the end.'

Mr Sainty said he could remember both the last win in 1989, and also the 2-1 win in the 1967 FA Cup.

But the most pressing matter on Saturday, was whether midfielder Alex Tettey could convert a chance when bearing down on David De Gea's home goal.

'Tettey gets one on target every two months so I suppose he was due one,' Mr Sainty joked. 'He does like a shot and they are generally not renowned for their accuracy.

'It was tense towards the end of the game, though, and it seemed like the clock had stopped.

'But it was a truly amazing afternoon and you could see how much it meant to the players.'

Professional boxer and city fan Anthony Ogogo had tickets for the match, but was unable to attend due to Strictly Come Dancing requirements. It's just an unbelievable result, particularly to win at somewhere as prestigious as Old Trafford,' he said. 'This is more than three points– we have beaten one of the giants of English football.

'We were on the verge of being sucked into a relegation dogfight but we can aim higher now, with the confidence that this result will bring.

'With games coming thick and fast, I hope it can breed confidence and we can capitalise on this impetus for Christmas period.'

Emily Ward, 25, from Costessey has been to every away match this season. 'I celebrated those goals similarly to Wembley and it couldn't have been better, more deserving people that scored', she said.

'The last 10 minutes lasted a lifetime and it was horrid. But to stand and celebrate afterwards was magical. It's was the stuff of dreams, it really was.'
