League One side Oxford United have signed Norwich City academy product Cameron Norman after the right-back’s superb season at King’s Lynn Town.

Norman had confirmed he was leaving the Linnets last week after defeat in the Southern Premier Division play-off final brought an end to Ian Culverhouse’s time in charge at The Walks.

The 22-year-old was a key part of the Lynn team which finished second, scoring seven goals in 52 games and contributing numerous assists.

Norman was part of the FA Youth Cup winning squad in 2013 but was released in 2016, initially playing for Norwich United before a spell with Concord Rangers in National League South.

Oxford boss Karl Robinson, who led the U’s to the mid-table safety of 16th place in League One this season, told his club’s website: “He scored plenty of goals and was leading the way with assists as well so I’m not surprised clubs were looking but he came here and took a look at what we are building – not just a new training ground but also in terms of the squad – and he wants to be part of that.

“He is tall, very athletic, has a great attitude and we believe is an outstanding prospect for the future.”

Norman, who was reportedly being scouted by a clutch of Football League clubs including Scunthorpe and Portsmouth, has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further year.

“It’s been a long road, to be honest,” the Canaries academy product told the Oxford Mail. “A lot of work has gone into it, but I can honestly say now I’m really excited and can’t wait to get going.

“From when I first spoke to Karl he gave me a plan of what he wanted to do with the club in the next few seasons and it wasn’t a difficult decision.

“I was on board from the first minute we spoke, really. I see it as an up-and-coming club and one which should be pushing for promotion and could easily be in the Championship.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I had a great season at Kings Lynn and full respect to them.

“We had an amazing season and we just fell short at the last hurdle, but I’m definitely eager to get back on the football pitch and for the first day of pre-season.”

Norwich-born Norman, from Sprowston, was at Norwich from 10 years old and signed as an academy scholar in 2012. He signed a two-year professional deal in 2014 and spent time on loan in the National League at Woking in 2015/16.

I’m nothing but confident. I’m really eager to get back into it,” he continued.

“It’s a place where I know I can thrive and it’s a level of football that I know I can be at.

“That doesn’t mean I want to be at this level for the rest of my career, because I’ve got aspirations to go even higher. Hopefully that’s with Oxford United.”
