Giving League One opposition a scare in the EFL Trophy has made young Norwich City midfielder Tom Scully even more determined to make it as a professional.

The former Everton midfielder, who joined the Canaries in the summer of 2018, was part of the City U21s team which was leading 1-0 at Oxford United on Tuesday night - only for two late goals to deny David Wright's team in their Group J opener.

"This is the dream job, playing under the floodlights, a good turnout as well," the 19-year-old said.

"I'd like to thank the Norwich fans for coming out, there was a lot of them to be fair, so happy with that.

"Everyone's buzzing, apart from the result, that's a killer, but we did well."

Just over 1,000 spectators watched the game at the Kassam Stadium, with 152 of them Norwich fans, and saw Shae Hutchinson fire the visitors ahead in the 63rd minute.

However, a goal from former Liverpool midfielder Cameron Brannagan in the 77th minute, after some quick thinking from a drop ball, and a fine finish from Shandon Baptiste in the 85th minute won the game for the U's.

Scully continued: "We just took a League One team to the limit and they had to bring on maybe their best player on (Brannagan) to win it, which fair play to him, he did.

"But we should be proud of ourselves."

The collective average age of City's starting XI was just over 18, and while Oxford did make nine changes to their starting line-up

"We know we played well, this is one of our first tests in this tournament, some of the lads are under 18. You look at the bench and we didn't have an 18-year-old on it.

"That was, apart from maybe Akin (Famewo) at the back, as the first of many games like this that we're going to play in."

Scully has been in the thick of a solid start to the season for City's development squad, winning one and drawing two of their opening four games.

"Three assists from three games, which I'm happy about, top of the leader-board there," he said with a smile.

"So, for me personally, that's good but I'm pleased with how I'm doing at the minute, so it's all good."
