Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay has defended the decision to allow club-record signing Jordan Rhodes to join Championship rivals Norwich City on loan.

The 28-year-old has joined the Canaries on a season-long deal, bringing an end to an unhappy 18-month stint at Hillsborough for the striker, since joining from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £10million in January 2017 after an initial loan spell.

Just 10 goals in 63 appearances in all competitions meant Rhodes was surplus to requirements this summer, with two years remaining on his contract, as he looks to rediscover the form of his prolific spells at Blackburn and Huddersfield.

'We must first look now at our team,' Luhukay explained. 'That is what the future has given us.

'Hopefully Jordan finds his way at Norwich. We hope Jordan plays a lot of games and scores a lot of goals for himself and his new club.

'We must have a little bit of patience and trust in what we have done. We look to the future and wait to see what can happen.'

The Canaries are understood to have struck a deal for Rhodes after the Owls significantly dropped the asking price from the reported £3m loan fee they had wanted, with City taking on a significant proportion of the former Ipswich trainee's wages.

Rhodes scored 87 goals in 148 games for Huddersfield between 2009 and 2012, then 85 in 169 matches for Blackburn until a switch to Middlesbrough in January 2016 reportedly worth £9m.

'Everyone knows the situation with Jordan,' Luhukay said of the decision, speaking to the Sheffield Star. 'He has been here for one and a half years fighting for the position in the first eleven. It has not worked.

'He gave us 100 per cent every day. I hope that Jordan makes a good decision to go to Norwich and he plays a lot of games and that he comes with the form which he had before he came to Sheffield Wednesday.

'We have also seen in the last months that we have strikers who are in good shape who can make goals and give us assists. It was a decision we made together and everyone is okay with that.'
