One of Norwich City’s most memorable away days took place on this day 23 years ago, when hundreds of supporters travelled to Italy to see the Canaries take on the mighty Inter Milan in the Uefa Cup.
Having beaten Vitesse Arnhem in the first round and recorded a famous victory over Bayern Munich in the second round, City were drawn against Italian giants Inter in the third round.
Dutch striker Dennis Bergkamp scored an 80th-minute penalty in the first leg at Carrow Road to give Osvaldo Bagnoli’s team the advantage in the tie.
On a misty afternoon in Milan, due to television scheduling, Bergkamp was again the key figure with a strike in the 88th minute to seal progression.
Mike Walker’s side wasted several chances to draw level before that goal, in front of around 30,000, but the disappointment soon subsided for the travelling Canaries fans – who stuck around to savour the moment.
With local police ready and waiting for any potential trouble, there was surprise when the City fans preceded to sing songs and celebrate their team’s valiant efforts in the club’s first European adventure.
