Edging a seven-goal thriller took a 'tremendous' effort to keep Norwich City's FA Youth Cup adventure alive.

That was the view of one of City's under-18 goal-scorers who lit up Carrow Road last night, coming from 2-0 down to eventually beat Newcastle 4-3 in extra time in the fifth round.

'It was a difficult one, the boys had to really get together, stay together,' said winger Alan Fleming, who had put City 3-2 ahead. 'Going two down isn't too great, so it took tremendous effort from all the lads to comeback and deserve to win.

'I don't know what it is, we just seemed to get off to a slow start to the game but everyone in the team is really, really close. So I guess when it comes to the really hard bits of the game where we need to stay together, we're able to do so and the past few games we've done well to comeback from losses that were almost put to bed.'

REPORT: Young Canaries seal another thrilling FA Youth Cup comeback to beat Newcastle 4-3 and earn home quarter-finalThe young Canaries came from behind to beat Barnsley and Derby in the earlier rounds and after showing their never-say-die spirit again David Wright's squad have earned a home quarter-final against Bury or Birmingham City.

It's the third time City have reached the last eight of the prestigious competition in the past six seasons – including the glorious win of 2013.

U18s coach Wright said: 'Mixed emotions because I'm really disappointed with the way we played but we're obviously happy that we're through. We had four moments of real quality in the game, which were obviously our goals, but the overall performance I'm very disappointed with.'

Anthony Spyrou made it 2-1 just before half-time, Timi Odusina equalised in the second half and Fleming's individual effort claimed a 3-2 lead, only for Newcastle to equalise in injury-time – before Spyrou won the tie in extra-time.

'If it had have been 2-0 (at half-time) we would have been quite lucky, they had numerous chances to score,' Wright continued.

'To be fair to the boys they made saves and put their bodies on the line and blocked. Then obviously Spyrou scores that goal and it just shifts the momentum slightly, puts a bit of doubt in their mind and puts us slightly on the front foot, then to be fair in the second half we were better.'
