Jacob Butterfield moved closer to a first team debut for the Canaries after successfully coming through his third Barclays U21 Premier League match for his new club on Friday.

The summer signing from Barnsley stepped up his comeback from the knee injury suffered against Leeds on New Year's Eve by playing the full 90 minutes as the hosts grabbed a narrow victory at Colney Training Ground.

City boss Chris Hughton revealed Butterfield could be in consideration when City play host to League One outfit Doncaster in the third round of the League Cup next Wednesday.

'It's a possibility, yes,' said Hughton, speaking before Butterfield's latest run-out as an over-age player.

'What we are conscious of is he has been out for a while. This is not a player who has just missed a chunk of pre-season.

'All the signs are very good. He has had no problems at all. He has come through all the development games he has played in and we expect him to do the same.

'There is a chance he will be involved on Wednesday.'

Butterfield was joined in the City side by defender Elliott Ward, who has not been included in Hughton's 25-strong Premier League squad, and striker Chris Martin.

Ward played for 70 minutes before being replaced by youngster Cameron McGeehan while Martin was given the full 90 minutes.

Jacob Murphy's first half goal was enough to earn City a hard-fought win.

Both sides had their chances, but the Canaries had young goalkeeper Jed Steer to thank for denying the visitors as he pulled off a string of fine saves.

What proved to be the winning goal came in the 28th minute when Josh Murphy came in off the left wing to pick out his twin brother Jacob with a fine through ball. The winger's pace then took him clear of Donervorn Daniels, allowing him space to fire a low left footed effort into the bottom corner.

Development squad manager Scott Marshall was pleased with the performance of his side, telling the club's official website: 'The character today was great. We didn't pass it as well as we can, but we showed character to hold on to it.

'The goal was excellent, but that's what Jacob and Josh Murphy can do. It was a fantastic pass from Josh and an even better finish from Jacob with his left foot. That was very pleasing, but there is still plenty to work on. We're looking for a better performance and some better quality in possession. But in terms of character it was great.

'Jed Steer did really well. When your team isn't keeping the ball as well as you'd like you need your goalkeeper to perform, and he did today.'
