The former Liverpool trainee, who celebrates his 20th birthday later this month, is understood to be on the verge of joining the League Two side.

The central midfielder was signed in the summer following a trial spell and was soon made City’s under-23 captain by coach Matt Gill.

Phillips has made 14 appearances for the Canaries’ development side this season, scoring two penalties, and has also featured as an unused substitute for the first team in two matches.

Cambridge sit 12th in the fourth tier, five points adrift of the play-off positions, and are managed by former Crystal Palace defender Shaun Derry.

A fracture of his back hindered Phillips’ development at Liverpool but he had previously played for the first team during pre-season under Brendan Rodgers in 2014.
