20 George Martin
337 appearances/one goal
Isaac George Martin began his career Sunderland at the age of 19 and then joined Portsmouth three years later before heading to Norfolk in 1913.
He was a centre-half who carried the nickname 'Pompey' – although he hailed from Gateshead and played for Portsmouth for only one season.
Martin's career, like so many others, was interrupted by the First World War, in which he served, but he resumed playing football for City after the end of hostilities and played on until the 1926-27 season, much of that time spent as the team captain, replacing Sam Wolstenholme.
Martin led out a very much changed side in the 1920-21 season – City's first in the Football League. Martin was said to be a character and was probably a traditional 'hard' centre-half – he was sent off in an FA Cup tie in December 1922 and banned for six weeks!
