Norwich City striker Gary Hooper is set to miss a ‘number of weeks’ with ankle ligament damage.
The 27-year-old striker picked up the injury in training ahead of the 3-1 Premier League win against Bournemouth, and Alex Neil confirmed at Colneyon Thursday afternoon the frontman is not in contention for Liverpool on Sunday.
Hooper had made two cameo appearances in the league this season but was touted with a loan move to Sheffield Wednesday during the summer transfer window.
The former Celtic striker is the only confirmed injury absentee ahead of the weekend trip to Anfield.
“Gary Hooper is going to be out a little bit longer than we anticipated with his ankle, which is unfortunate. Potentially it could be weeks,” said Neil. “We got it scanned and the initial suggestion was it wasn’t going to take long but it has not settled down as quickly as we would have hoped so we have had it injected now and hopefully it shouldn’t be too long, but it will be a number of weeks.”
Andre Wisdom will not feature against his parent club under the terms of his season-long loan deal but Lewis Grabban is back in the mix after his recent suspension and absence from the squad for last weekend’s win over his old club.
“Lewis has trained with the squad the last couple of days and so he comes into my thoughts for the weekend,” said Neil. “With Andre he won’t be eligible as part of his loan agreement.”
Combative midfielder Alex Tettey is one game away from a suspension after picking up his fourth yellow card against the Cherries, but with Youssouf Mulumbu still on the comeback trail following foot surgery Neil is confident he has plenty of cover.
“Yes, it’s a concern, but I have Gary O’Neil there, I have Graham Dorrans, who didn’t start last weekend, so I have more than enough cover in central areas,” said Neil. “Midfield is an area I like to make sure we get control of so I am confident we are well-equipped in that part of the squad and if anyone is missing we have guys to come in.”
