Robert Snodgrass insists Norwich City's Premier League improvement is built on good old fashioned values.

City's defensive solidity will be tested once more tonight against a Southampton team set-up to attack, and Snodgrass is well aware of his own personal responsibilities.

Chris Hughton praised the work of his wide players in the recent Premier League win over Manchester United and the Scot knows that is part of the modern game.

'People just think with wingers these days it's all about creating but you look at even United and the way their wingers defend, it starts from the front sometimes, the way you defend,' he said.

'Look at the strikers, Grant Holt's putting his body on the line and winning headers in the box and Steve Morison, Wes (Hoolahan), it takes that sometimes to get you lifted and the fans see that and you can see that all the way through the team.

'I was always that type of player at Leeds, always working as hard as I could for the team because I think, first and foremost, you have got a job. Everybody has a work ethic here and everyone wants to work hard for each other, and we're taking our chances now, which we weren't really doing at the start of the season. I always said it was just a matter of time before it happened.'

Snodgrass knows he must keep performing to stay ahead of the likes of Elliott Bennett in the pecking order.

'There is Andrew Surman as well, but there is great togetherness,' he said. 'Elliott's a great lad. Me and Pilky are in there just now but it's one of those where he was in, Pilky and Surman were in at different times, so it's up to the manager.

'All you have to do as a footballer is when you're called upon, try to give 110pc and that's what I will do every time I'm called upon.'
