Graham Dorrans has been called into the Scotland squad for European Championship qualifiers against Poland and Gibraltar.

The Scottish Football Association confirmed the Norwich City midfielder had come in to Gordon Strachan's squad ahead of Thursday's Hampden Park clash with Poland, which the Scots must win to keep their slim qualifying hopes alive.

Dorrans joins Canaries team-mates Steven Whittaker and Russell Martin in the squad for the final Group D games, with Sunday's match in Gibraltar to follow.

The Glasgow-born 28-year-old replaces Wolves midfielder Kevin McDonald, who pulled out on Sunday with a lower back injury.

Dorrans won the last of his 10 Scotland caps in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Croatia two years ago and had an informal agreement with Strachan to stay out of international contention until his club career was back on track.

After joining City on loan from West Brom in February, Dorrans played an important part in helping steer Alex Neil's side to promotion back to the Premier League before making his move permanent in the summer.

He has featured in all 10 of City's matches in all competitions so far this season, starting nine of them.

The former Livingston player comes in after former West Brom team-mates James Morrison and Darren Fletcher picked up knocks during their team's defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday. However, Fletcher finished the game and Morrison, who went off with an ankle injury, is suspended for the Poland clash.

Ikechi Anya also suffered a muscle problem while playing for Watford against Bournemouth while Celtic expect Charlie Mulgrew to pull out at some stage after missing several games with a thigh problem.

The Republic of Ireland – including Canaries players Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady – are currently four points clear of Scotland in third place in Group D.

They host Germany on Thursday before travelling to Poland on Sunday, needing just one win to guarantee a play-off place but with a slim chance of automatic qualification still possible.

Other City players on duty include striker Dieumerci Mbokani with the DR of Congo, who play Nigeria in a friendly double-header in Belgium on Thursday and Monday. Sebastien Bassong may also face Nigeria in Belgium, with Cameroon, on Sunday.

Kyle Lafferty is suspended for Northern Ireland's game against Greece in Belfast on Thursday but may return against Finland in Helsinki on Sunday.

Martin Olsson is also away with Sweden, Alex Tettey with Norway, Nathan Redmond with England Under-21s, Louis Thompson with Wales U21s and Harry Toffolo with England U20s.
