Norwich City have been handed a home draw in the third round of the FA Cup and will face Championship rivals Coventry City.

The Canaries got a close-up look of their cup opponents just a few days ago having drawn 1-1 with the Sky Blues in the Championship.

The third round tie will take place across the weekend of January 9-10, 2021.

Each successful club at that stage will receive £82,000 from the competition's prize fund - a much-needed boost for clubs who have seen their finances suffer as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Canaries last faced the Sky Blues in the competition in 1999, losing 3-1 at Carrow Road. Noel Whelan put Coventry ahead before Chris Llewellyn equalised for City. Goals from Cedric Rousel and John Eustace booked their place in the fourth round.

City's last win over Coventry in the FA Cup came in 1995 when goals from Darren Eadie and Mike Sheron ensured they progressed to the next round with a 3-1 win.

The draw was made by Robbie Savage live on BT Sport ahead of their televised game between Canvey Island and Boreham Wood on Monday evening. The Canaries were ball number 28.

The Canaries reached the quarter-final stage of the competition for the first time in 28 years last season, before being knocked out by Manchester United in June. City beat Preston North End, Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur to reach the last eight.

Championship success will be the target for City boss Daniel Farke this season, but the Canaries head coach has gone on record in the past of stating he is a fan of the cup competitions.

Speaking about the competition last season, Farke said: "You have to give your all to make those fans proud. My players have a good sense of this responsibility," he said. "We are in a blessed position to work for this amazing club. We play to create memories, we play for our supporters.

"Sometimes we look at this game from a business or a financial perspective. I think it's quite important to keep in mind why we all started to play football.

"In the cup games you sense this even more because it is do or die. That is why I like this competition."
