Norwich City loanee Remi Matthews is ready to answer the call and make his Football League debut for Burton in Saturday's historic opening day game against Scunthorpe United.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's club is preparing for their first-ever game in League One and Matthews is poised to deputise for suspended number one Jon McLaughlin, after starring in the Brewers' final 3-1 friendly defeat to Derby County at the weekend.

Matthews re-joined Burton on loan until January earlier this summer after extending his Carrow Road contract and the 21-year-old is relishing the prospect of his senior league debut.

'It was up to me to do the best in the pre-season games we've had, and you've got to think there's a few other keepers here who want to do that as well,' he said. 'So I've just got to play well, train well and take it from there. I can't go into it expecting to play at Scunthorpe, so it's up to me and if the gaffer wants me to play he'll put me in the team.

'But you've got Dean Lyness and young Sam Hornby fighting for that place as well. My senior debut would be a huge moment. It was what I was hoping for last time but obviously Jon McLaughlin, who is a very good keeper, kept me out of the team. If I can get my debut we'll go from there.'

The Gorleston-born keeper knows he has to impress Hasselbaink and Norwich boss Alex Neil, who brought in former Blackburn stopper Jake Kean recently to provide back-up to John Ruddy and Declan Rudd.

'The aim is to get a few games, get that experience and get known out there a bit more,' Matthews told the Burton Mail. 'Then I can go back to Norwich and kick on. If that means extending my loan and playing here, then so be it.'

Matthews was named Burton's man-of-the-match on Saturday, despite the club's final warm-up defeat to Championship neighbours Derby, and Hasselbaink wants a marked improvement ahead of the big league kick-off.

'It was a lesson for us. I think as a unit it was the worst match we have played in pre-season,' he said. 'We have to look at the positive side of it and learn from the mistakes. You don't win anything in pre-season. It was not us,' he said. 'Normally we have energy. We come close to people. We press. We didn't. So it was disappointing. Overall I didn't get out of it what I needed.'
