Angus Gunn's encouraging start to his Norwich City loan has seen the Manchester City goalkeeper retain his place in the England Under-21 squad.

Gunn has started all of City's four Championship matches so far and largely impressed, despite mixed results for Daniel Farke's developing team.

The Norwich-born 21-year-old has six U21 caps already and was with the Young Lions at the European U21 Championship in Poland this summer but didn't play, providing cover for Jordan Pickford as England were knocked out on penalties by Germany in the semi-finals.

With Pickford now too old for the U21 age group and expected to be named in the senior squad after performing well since his £30m switch to Everton, Gunn looks to have his chance of claiming the number one shirt.

He has been named in Aidy Boothroyd's squad alongside Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson, who is on loan at League One side Shrewsbury, and Newcastle's Freddie Woodman – who was a key part of the team which won the U20 World Cup this summer.

A dozen players from that squad are named for two games as qualification for the 2019 European U21 Championship in Italy and San Marino begins.

Boothroyd's team are away to the Netherlands on Friday, September 1 (5pm) before returning home to play Latvia at Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium on Tuesday, September 5 (7.45pm).

Many of the players who featured for the U21s in the summer, including former Norwich wingers Jacob Murphy and Nathan Redmond, are now too old to represent the Young Lions.

Fellow Canaries goalkeeper Michael McGovern has also retained his place in the Northern Ireland squad, as expected.

The 33-year-old is his country's number one and has 22 caps. Michael O'Neill's team continue their World Cup Group C qualification campaign in San Marino on Friday September 1 (7.45pm) and at home against Czech Republic on Monday, September 4.

City duo Russell Martin and Steven Naismith are also in the Scotland squad for Group F matches in Lithuania on Friday, September 1 (7.45pm) and at home to Malta on Monday, September 4 (7.45pm).

Canaries playmaker Wes Hoolahan is also in the Republic of Ireland squad for Group D games in Georgia on Saturday, September 2 (5pm) and at home to Serbia on Tuesday, September 5 (7.45pm).
