Norwich City fans will have to show photographic ID at the upcoming East Anglian derby.

The new rule was announced on the football club's website.

Away fans watching the match against Ipswich Town Football Club at Portman Road on Sunday, September 2 will have to show photo ID in conjunction with their ticket.

A statement on the Canaries website said: 'Photographic ID will be required on the day in company with your match ticket for anyone aged over 18 years old.

'Any persons aged under 18 years will need to bring their season ticket or membership card as ID.

'This ID must match the name printed on the match ticket or entry will be refused.

'All supporters are advised to arrive at Portman Road no later than 30 minutes before kick-off, to allow for the required time to carry out safety checks that are likely to lengthen queuing times.'

It added that all match day tickets are non-transferable.

The online statement continued: 'Tickets will be sold on a one ticket per person basis, with the name and customer number of the purchaser printed on the ticket.

'If you cannot use the ticket yourself it must be returned to the Norwich City ticket office by August 31 to either get a full refund or to change the name of the person using the ticket.

'Any amends to the name on the ticket will make the original ticket invalid.'

The move comes after some incidents from football fans at derby matches.

In response to the new measure, Canaries fan David Spinks said: 'It takes long enough to get into Portman Road as a Norwich fan at the best of times, this will just make it even worse.

'In 2011 I didn't get into the ground until the 20th minute and I arrived an hour before kick off.'

Peter Meades, a Norwich City season ticket holder, said: 'This feels like a potential and unnecessary infringement of personal liberty and a recipe for chaos at the turnstiles.'

Robin Sainty, chairman of the Canaries' Trust, said the change had 'caused a bit of agitation among the fans'.

He said: 'The most important thing is that everything goes ahead without any trouble. Nobody wants to get injured. We haven't had that much in the way of violence at derbies.'

A Norwich City Football Club spokesman said: 'The new ticketing security measures have been introduced after full consultation between both clubs and police and will be introduced for both East Anglian derby games this season – the first of which is on September 2 at Portman Road.

'As always we want everyone present at the games to enjoy themselves, but in the right spirit and in a safe environment and these measures have been introduced to help this happen.'
