Norwich City assistant manager Colin Calderwood has confirmed first choice centre backs Michael Turner and Sebastien Bassong have not travelled to the USA to continue their rehab from injuries that ruled them out of last season's Premier League finale.

Bassong had a recurring knee problem for most of the second part of City's successful top flight campaign whilst Turner missed the crucial run-in after injuring his groin against Reading in late April.

Both are expected to feature during the domestic leg of City's pre-season build up after the Canaries return from games on the West Coast against Dorados on Thursday night before an MLS double header with San Jose and Portland.

City chief Chris Hughton has also delayed his departure from the UK but is expected to be in charge for the opening friendly against the Mexicans in Sacramento tomorrow night. Norwich's 25-man squad will repeat their opening day training schedule later on with sessions at Stanford University and San Jose's training complex.

'I think it was better for the ones left at home, Seb and Michael especially, to stay there. They wouldn't have taken part in any of the games over the 10-12 days,' said Calderwood, with Leon Barnett also an absentee. 'You can't go straight into the work at too high an intensity. The first thing that we've got to do is make sure that we've got as many players training for 100pc of the sessions that we've got – so that they don't miss a session.'

All of Norwich's new signings are in the touring party along with the fit-again Andrew Surman and Dani Ayala who spent all of last season on loan at Championship club Nottingham Forest.
