Norwich City chief executive David McNally has told supporters the Canaries have yet to make any bids for potential January transfer window recruits.

McNally fielded a variety of questions on his personal Twitter account both on Sunday evening and Monday morning in response to weekend reports linking City with strike trio Craig Mackail-Smith, Utrecht's Jacob Mulenga and Monaco's Ibrahima Toure.

McNally tweeted on Monday morning: 'Despite what you may read in the newspapers today, we have not made bids for any players at this stage.'

In response to one national newspaper report that City were weighing up a second offer for Senegal forward Toure – the 27-year-old has scored 19 goals in 23 domestic matches in France this season – after their opening bid of 2.5m was rejected, McNally responded by saying: 'Nothing in it. We have not made a bid for him.'

Another widespread rumour that surfaced online prior to the weekend's 4-3 Premier League defeat to Manchester City suggested Zambia striker Mulenga has already visited Carrow Road ahead of a move from Dutch side Utrecht. McNally's response was a simple: 'No.'

Mulenga is currently top scorer for Utrecht in the Dutch Eredivisie with seven goals in 16 appearances, but is unlikely to be available until late January with the striker off to the Africa Cup of Nations to help Zambia, coached by former Cambridge United manager Herve Renard, defend their title in South Africa.

Brighton front player Mackail-Smith was heavily touted with a summer move to Norfolk, with one national newspaper on Saturday claiming Chris Hughton is again poised to revive his interest in the 3m-rated former Peterborough United frontman, who was previously on ex-Canaries' boss Paul Lambert's radar.

Inevitably, while the in-tray has been the subject of most speculation as Hughton aims to bolster City's Premier League survival bid, there could well be departures. City welcome back loan players Simon Lappin, from Cardiff, Chris Martin, from Swindon, Elliott Ward, from Nottingham Forest and Jacob Butterfield, from Bolton, this week – and not all will be confident of being named in the new 25-man squads which have to be submitted once the window has closed.

Not surprisingly, Chelsea look set to be among the biggest Premier League New Year spenders, having reportedly sealed a 7.5m deal for Newcastle striker Demba Ba.

Struggling Queens Park Rangers are rumoured to be looking to sign Joe Cole from Liverpool, Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila, Marseille striker Loic Remy and West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame. Liverpool have themselves denied suggestions they have bid 9.5m for Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder.

The link between Manchester United and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to go away – with a 60m fee mentioned, with Old Trafford keeper David de Gea and winger Nani part of the deal. And Sunderland want to sign former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill, 33, on loan from New York Red Bulls.
