Alex Neil made it clear on Monday afternoon speculation linking him with Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga is wide of the mark, following a City Ground weekend scouting mission.

Neil confirmed he was in the East Midlands to watch Forest's 4-3 league win over Wigan - two upcoming Championship opponents for the Canaries - with Assombalonga on target before being forced off with a suspected hamstring injury.

The City chief is confident of completing his striker search before the end of next week's transfer window after missing out on Ross McCormack and Steven Fletcher this summer but Neil, speaking at his pre-League Cup press call ahead of Tuesday's second round tie against Coventry, brushed off reports he was making a personal check on the Reds' hitman.

'Yeah, I was there taking in a game. We try to get to as many as we can,' he said. 'The last round of midweek games all my staff were at games. That is a regular occurrence it is nothing new. If people want to put two and two together they will come up with seven.'

Neil also made it clear there are no bids on the table for Seb Bassong following rumoured interest from Championship duo Leeds United and Fulham.

'Seb is not in the team at the minute. He performed well the last time we were in the Championship and he helped get us up but at the moment Timm (Klose) is in his place and performing well over the course of the season so far,' he said. 'Whoever performs best will play. We have kept two clean sheets, Blackburn we should have kept a clean sheet and Ipswich was sloppy from us. We have players who must bide their time at the minute and Seb is one of those.

'There have been no enquiries. If someone comes in and want to take him on loan that is never going to happen. If someone wants to put money on the table and buy Seb then Seb will have a look at it and if he deems it is the best thing for him and we deem that is the case then we'll have a look. I am not actively looking to sell Seb and he is a part of my squad, who might become an important player as the season develops.'

Bassong could feature against the Sky Blues but Ivo Pinto will not be involved ahead of results on a hamstring injury that forced him off at the break in Sunday's 1-1 East Anglian derby.

'Ivo will get the results of scans on his hamstring later today,' said Neil. 'He just tweaked it and actually felt it in the warm-up. He over-stretched for a ball and we were hoping he would be fine. He started the game, no issues, and unfortunately as the game wore on it got worse.'
