Chris Hughton has warned his Norwich City players there can be no repeat of the Canaries' Premier League hammering at Liverpool as they aim to put their campaign back on track.

Hughton delivered a few home truths in the away dressing room following the 5-0 defeat at Anfield, which he expects to have the desired effect ahead of this weekend's Luton Town FA Cup tie and Tottenham's pending league visit.

'You try to get what you need to get off your chest. That is normal. There is nobody who walks into a changing room after a defeat like that who would expect an easy time,' he said. 'Over the next couple of days we will go through it again and put it behind us because we have an important FA Cup tie and then Tottenham. I've got a really good group of lads. We have under-achieved and under-performed. I know that, they know that and as individuals they know that more than anybody. It's not nice in any defeat but it's never nice when you're getting beaten the way we did.

'It's normal, there were a few things said, but always said in the right way. What's important now is that we get this one well behind us. We have an FA Cup tie to look forward to, and then a very big game at home to Tottenham.'

City's heavy loss on Merseyside prolonged their sluggish start to the New Year which has now brought one point from the last 18 after a club-record 10 Premier League games unbeaten.

'When you're in a run like this, you appreciate more the good run we had and we're very grateful for that at the moment,' said Hughton. 'We started off the season in those first seven games with three points, then we had that excellent run and now a dip.

'What is more disappointing is that in the previous games, those four defeats over Christmas and then the draw against Newcastle, we have been close. This is probably the only time in this current period we have been well beaten and we need to address it. I think sometimes you have to accept with the quality of these top teams if you have a bad day you can get well beaten. We beat Arsenal and Manchester United when we were at the top of our game. Sometimes what can happen is a defeat like that and a type of performance like that gets a reaction from the players – and we'll certainly need it.'

Hughton is adamant his current squad have already shown they can compete in the Premier League, despite City's concerted efforts to attract new recruits in the transfer window.

'We know what we have done so far and so do those players in terms of the points they have managed to accumulate,' he said. 'Those players have certainly shown that we are capable of getting enough results to achieve what we want. The reality is so are lots of other teams and now it is about the players showing enough belief to get back to winning ways.'
