Chris Hughton has backed the authorities to act after being subjected to alleged racist abuse on a social media web site.

The Norwich City boss admitted on Friday afternoon he was 'angry and disappointed' at becoming embroiled in an incident which is now being investigated by the police after City issued a statement yesterday condemning the use of 'unacceptable terminology' directed towards Hughton.

'Yes, it was something I was made aware of yesterday. Obviously I can't comment too much on the specifics of that because it is with the right group of people for action, and rightly so,' he said. 'I'm very sad about it and disappointed. Unfortunately we are in an age these days with the use of social media that anybody can have access to those sort of forums to air their views. Fortunately these days the percentages of these sort of incident are far less but nevertheless it is still very sad to hear. It is not pleasant to hear about those sort of things directed towards you but as I say it is about percentages. I was brought up in an era when the percentages were an awful lot higher. There are a lot of fine organisations who have worked incredibly hard in society but specifically within football you have the likes of 'Kick It Out' and 'Show Racism the Red Card' initiatives in tandem with the FA, Premier League and PFA. They have worked to try and eradicate this sort of abuse but it can only be dealt with the appropriate people and that I am sure it will be.'

Hughton's reaction at his prematch press call ahead of Chelsea's Premier League visit echoed the club's official statement released on Thursday afternoon.

It said: 'The club has been made aware of racist language about our manager Chris Hughton posted on an unofficial fans' Facebook page in the last few days and the matter has been reported to the Police as a hate crime. Following last weekend's victory for the Canaries away to Stoke, unacceptable terminology was used on the Facebook page '**OFFICIAL**!!! Ipswich - Norwich fans banter/insult/joke page'. It should be stressed the site is in no way officially affiliated to either club.

'Kick It Out, football's equality and inclusion campaign, have reported the comments made as a hate crime to the Police and Norwich City totally supports this stance. We are in dialogue with Kick It Out and Ipswich Town and will co-operate fully with the Police investigation into the incident.

We have a zero tolerance policy on racism and all other forms of discrimination and any supporter found guilty of racist abuse faces a lifetime ban from Carrow Road in addition to any punishment handed out by the courts.'
