Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips should snub a move to Norwich City this summer as the Canaries are unlikely to avoid relegation next season.

That's the verdict of former United striker Noel Whelan, who feels Phillips would be better off staying at Elland Road despite the midfielder attracting Premier League interest.

Norwich are reportedly one of those suitors along with Bournemouth and Southampton although speculation Leeds have put a £15m price tag on the 23-year-old's head would appear to rule Daniel Farke's men out of the running.

Whilst Whelan believes Phillips might be able to command a first team place at Carrow Road he says the Canaries will struggle to stay in the Premier League.

Asked about speculation Phillips could be on the move, Whelan told Football Insider: "Don't do it, you're better off at Leeds. I'm not sure he would play regularly at Southampton or Bournemouth, they've already got quality central midfielders.

"It might be one season in the Premier League for Norwich and they could be going down in 12 months and Leeds could be going up. Are Norwich going to be competitive in the Premier League? I'm not so sure."

City have raided Leeds on several occasions in the past, regularly plucking their star players, including the likes of Jonny Howson, Robert Snodgrass and Bradley Johnson.

It is understood City are in the market for a defensive midfielder but sporting director Stuart Webber has insisted the club will not break the bank this summer to survive in the Premier League.

Reports have claimed City have a transfer kitty of around £20m to strengthen for the top flight, making a move for Phillips, who has two years remaining on his Leeds contract, unlikely.
