Norwich City appeal red card shown to midfielder Bradley Johnson during 0-0 draw with Newcastle United

The club confirmed the appeal using its @NorwichCityFC Twitter account, stating: 'We can confirm that the club have appealed against the red card received by Bradley Johnson in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United.'

Magpies striker Loic Remy was dismissed for an apparent head butt gesture towards Johnson in the 80th minute of last night's Premier League clash.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew claimed after the match that the head butt gesture had been exaggerated by Johnson, who also saw red for an initial shove into the Frenchman's chest.

It was Johnson's first red card of his Norwich City career and his first in almost three years, since being sent off for old club Leeds United in a 3-3 draw against Barnsley in February 2011.

Chris Foy's decision to dismiss the combative midfielder was only the third time he had seen red in his career, with the other dismissal when on loan from Northampton in the Conference with Ebbsfleet United, against Canvey Island in January 2006.

That may come as some surprise considering Johnson has picked up 65 yellow cards in nearly 530 appearances as a professional, with the 26-year-old booked 10 times for the Canaries last season.

He, and City boss Chris Hughton, will hope to see that third red card of his career chalked off by the FA now though, or Johnson could miss Saturday's Premier League clash at Cardiff on Saturday, ending a run of 10 successive Premier League starts for Johnson.

He is due to serve a three-match ban due to the red card being for violent conduct.

With Jonny Howson still out injured and Alexander Tettey only making his comeback from a long-term injury in the closing stages of the Newcastle game, Johnson's services are much-needed by the Canaries at the moment.

However, an FA Regulatory Committee must be convened to make the appeal decision and if that is not held before the weekend, Johnson would be available for Cardiff.
