Steven Naismith’s stoppage time header sealed an FA Cup third round replay for Norwich City after a 2-2 draw against Premier League Southampton.
Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida appeared to have won it for Claude Puel’s men after Steven Whittaker had levelled from the penalty spot, but the Scot delivered a cross for his international team mate Naismith to guide a glancing header past Harry Lewis in front of only 12,479 at Carrow Road.
City extended their unbeaten run to three games but there was an injury downside with Timm Klose hobbling out of the action shortly after Yoshida’s second-half header.
Alex Neil made five changes to the line up who beat Derby County 3-0 in the Championship. Nelson Oliveira, Ivo Pinto, Wes Hoolahan and John Ruddy were left out of the matchday squad. Michael McGovern replaced Ruddy with Steven Whittaker the one change to the backline. Alex Pritchard was in for Hoolahan to supply Cameron Jerome. City’s bench included fit-again midfielder Matt Jarvis, plus Kyle Lafferty, along with Carlton Morris and Ben Godfrey.
Saints’ coach Puel gave 19-year-old keeper Lewis a senior debut but Nathan Redmond had to settle for a place on the bench on his first competitive return to his old club since a summer move. Former City loanee Ryan Bertrand was passed fit after a bout of illness but England international and League One title winner with the Canaries Fraser Forster was given the afternoon off.
Saints dominated possession in the opening moments but Martin Olsson had the first strike, with a 25-yard free kick gathered by the debutant Lewis. Pritchard was far less precise when he stepped up from the same range in the 13th minute after van Dijk hauled down Naismith.
Alex Tettey clipped Shane Long to present the Saints with a central set piece but McGovern flew to his right to beat away Dusan Tadic’s free kick.
Long spurned a clear chance to put the Premier League visitors in front in the 27th minute when he controlled Josh Sims’ diagonal ball but lifted his shot over McGovern bar.
The City keeper then tipped the Republic of Ireland international’s looping header over in the 38th minute after a prolonged lull in the action.
Saints nudged in front from the corner when Tadic drilled a ball to the far post for the unmarked van Dijk to lash a volley past McGovern.
Norwich were gifted a way back into the tie in the 51st minute from the penalty spot when young Lewis hauled down Jerome trying to recover from his heavy touch in controlling a back pass. Referee Kavanagh had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick and Whittaker coolly stepped up to send Lewis the wrong way.
Southampton hit back hard with a sustained bout of possession but McGovern was secure to gather Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s hit.
The Northern Irish international then superbly tipped over Tadic’s rising half-volley with Bertrand a constant threat down the Saints’ left.
City fell behind again, with Timm Klose off the pitch requiring treatment to his left leg, as Yoshida rose unmarked at the near post to bullet Hojbjerg’s cross past McGovern.
A hobbling Klose and Josh Murphy made way before the game restarted with Ryan Bennett and Jacob Murphy introduced.
Redmond made his entrance for the final 10 minutes as Southampton toyed with the Championship side before Kyle Lafferty replaced the ineffective Pritchard.
Jacob Murphy did chop back on to his left to test Lewis but the teenager was far more decisive this time at his near post.
City rescued a replay in stoppage time when Whittaker whipped in a cross guided home by Naismith.
