An American football team have challenged Norwich City to a match to decide who should be able to use the Twitter term #NCFC.
Carolina RailHawks, of Cary North Carolina, were yesterday rebranded as North Carolina FC and started to use #NCFC on Twitter.
This is the term usually used by Norwich City and the club responded to the US team on Twitter last night with a tongue-in-cheek message.
It said: “@NorthCarolinaFC Guys, DM us. We need a chat. Nothing to worry about. There’s just this thing... #ncfc.”
The team from Cary replied a couple of hours later with a challenge for the Canaries. They tweeted: “Hey @NorwichCityFC, we’ll play you for it.”
The Twitter spat has received a lot of attention from both sets of fans online.
@iamnimosley tweeted: “As an NC girl who goes hard for the Canaries, I think this is okay.”
@GavinMorris7 said: “The hashtag ain’t biggerenough for the 2 of us.”
And @kburhop wrote: “The Hashtag Cup, it could be an annual event.”
North Carolina FC were founded in 2006 and play in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the second tier of US football.
