Jacob Murphy was on target twice as the young Canaries booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Norfolk Senior Cup at the Football Development Centre, Bowthorpe.

Jacob opened the scoring for City in the first half and then netted an 89th minute winner for the Magpies after Scott Roberts had equalised midway through the second half.

Dereham manager Matt Henman utilised his squad to the full with a tough festive programme around the corner. Strikers Luke Tuttle and Shaun Bammant were rested with Kyle Downes being selected along with younger players Sam Pledger, Ryan Hawkins and Callum White.

Norwich pressed from the start and after winning two corners Jamar Loza hit a 20 yard drive which lacked the power to trouble Matt Powley. Then the Dereham keeper made a fine save with his legs to keep out Reece Hall-Johnson's low drive.

As the pattern of play continued Powley made another good stop, springing to his left to palm away Hall-Johnson's well struck effort in the 23rd minute.

The Canaries finally made the breakthrough in the 28th minute when Jacob Murphy chested the ball forward and progressed before slotting home from close range. Norwich won a free-kick 20 yards out in the 42nd minute and Powley saved Joshua Murphy's curler and reacted well to keep out Loza's follow up.

Matt Howard and Jack Waddle came on for Dereham after the break as they looked to get back on level terms but again the Canaries were pegging them back. In the 60th minute Jacob Murphy headed wide at the far post when well placed from a deep centre and then Cameron King was denied by Powley.

Dereham came close when Roberts was unable to convert Callum White's cross from the byline. However from their next attack Aaron Kay's corner came out to Roberts who thumped home a rasping right foot drive inside Remi Matthews' right hand post for the equaliser in the 71st minute.

As Dereham became more expansive play became more open. In the 88th minute Joshua Murphy hit a 30 yard drive inches wide. Powley then instinctively palmed away from Loza before the young Canaries netted the winner in the 89th minute, Jacob Murphy slotting home from 10 yards.

The win earned City a home tie with King's Lynn Town in the last eight on Saturday, January 5. A venue for the match has yet to be confirmed.
