Seb Bassong is on the right path to a Norwich City recall.

The former Canaries' captain and player of the season is yet to feature for Neil Adams since he replaced Chris Hughton towards the end of last season, but the Cameroon international skippered the development squad in Monday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton's Under-21s.

Adams revealed on Thursday he was impressed with what he saw at St Mary's from the out-of-favour defender, who has not been involved during City's early Championship promotion bid and was also omitted from the club's summer training trip to Italy.

'I thought Seb did well and that is what we want from him in terms of his application,' said Adams, who brought in the likes of fellow centre backs Carlos Cuellar, Ignasi Miquel and Jos Hooiveld during the transfer window. 'I still think he is well off in terms of his fitness, and that is understandable, he would probably tell you that himself, but that is exactly what you want from a senior player. He can be proud of his performance. Whatever game they go out to play in you want them to knuckle down and put in a performance.'

Adams has had numerous discussions with Bassong and his representative over the early weeks of the new season.

'We've had meetings, in my office and at higher levels. It's not like we don't speak to each other. His agent has been involved as well so we all know where we stand with Seb,' he said. 'I wouldn't rule it out (playing in the first team). He is our player and with his performance the other night that is what I want to see. Can I see him playing again? Never say never. Seb has not been involved to this point, but he needs to train well and he is doing that.'
