Neil Adams insists the Canaries must temper their gung-ho approach to get out of the Championship.

Adams' squad dismantled OGC Nice 5-1 on Monday in their latest pre-season warm-up, with City's attacking play fused with a potency lacking during last season's relegation struggle. The Norwich boss wants his men to be aggressive going forward, but not to the detriment of defensive solidity.

'The team scored 28 goals last season and that was nowhere near enough,' he said. 'We know that was in the top flight, but I have done all the research and you look back at the teams who have got promoted and you have to score goals in this division. You have to get 80-odd points minimum in this league and you have to score 80-odd goals minimum to get up there; it doesn't take a genius to work out you've got to create and score.'

Adams knows any naivety will be exploited in the Championship.

'The key obviously is making sure we get the balance right. We have to make sure we don't concede and we conceded a needless one (against Nice), but if we can attack in the manner and with the tempo we did in that game, then obviously we'll cause teams problems,' he said. 'We've got to build a team and principles of play around that.

'It is my job to make sure when we don't score a bagful in games we don't concede either, but I have been here 20 years and I know the Norwich people want to see attacking football. If you speak to them about what Norwich City means they will tell you they expect a passing team that plays attractive football. That has probably slipped in the last season or so and it's up to us to get it back and put smiles back on people's faces.'

City's stroll against the French Ligue One outfit still left plenty of scope for improvement.

'I thought they were a very good passing side who moved the ball really well,' said Adams 'I was pleased with our performance. We scored some good goals, but could have scored more. One criticism of us is we just probably needed to keep the ball better. They set a standard of how you can keep the ball and we need to get to that level.

'Overall it was a good win, a good work-out and some excellent play throughout the night and we have to take confidence from that. We've got a good group of players, albeit we've got one or two niggling injuries at the minute, and it will be better when they've cleared up, but certainly in the pre-season games we've had so far we've looked sharp and scored some good goals.'
