The transition from winger to striker is continuing to go rather well for Norwich City youngster Anthony Spyrou.

The 18-year-old scored two late goals to earn City's under-23s a 3-2 win against senior opposition at non-league Dereham Town in their final pre-season friendly on Monday night.

Spyrou scored 11 goals in 20 games for the U18s last season and has notched five in six friendly games with the U23s during pre-season – but the tall teen is still learning his role.

'When Steve Weaver came in as academy manager he saw me and said 'you're not a winger, you're a striker', put me up front and I've never looked back,' the Canaries prospect explained. 'I'm really enjoying it.

'At the start of last season I was a winger, so moving halfway through it was all a bit new to me but I'm really starting to get the hang of it now and obviously playing up front with Adam (Idah) is easy as well because we work well together. I'm looking to get into double figures this season and hopefully get a loan move further on down the line.'

Idah has also scored five during pre-season as the strike pairing continue the form which saw them shine during the U18s' run to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup last season.

The Ireland Under-19 international was teed up by Spyrou to open the scoring at Aldiss Park as well before Dereham claimed the lead.

'We've got a connection on and off the pitch. I think it shows when we're on the pitch as well, we just sort of know where one another is,' Spyrou added.

'It helps that we're so close off the pitch because, like I say, it reflects on the pitch. It was good from the team (at Dereham), it was a good test, a bit different but we just want to take this into next Monday and hopefully get the three points.'

That Monday game is the first Premier League Two fixture of the campaign for Matt Gill's squad, away to Aston Villa at Banks's Stadium in Walsall.

'If we can hit the ground running on Monday and keep scoring goals, there's not much more we can do as strikers,' the Essex-raised forward added.

'That's what we need and hopefully the right people will be watching us and we can prove ourselves at the next level.'
