Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has been impressed by the rapid progress of former Norwich City academy winger Glenn Middleton.

The Scotland Under-21 international has made two Europa League qualifying appearances for the Gers in the past week, playing the final 10 minutes of a 2-0 home win over Macedonian side Shkupi and then coming on in the 64th minute of Tuesday night's 0-0 away draw which sealed progress for Steven Gerrard's side.

The Canaries agreed to let Middleton join boyhood club Rangers on deadline day of the January transfer window earlier this year as he felt he deserved first-team chances, with a sell-on clause included.

Former Leeds and Liverpool midfielder McAllister said: 'He has done very well and he just needs to build on what he is doing, continue his progress and listen to the advice of the coaches and the manager.

'We have got a player there.'

The 19-year-old again looked bright but could only find the side-netting late on with one of the Glasgow side's best chances of the night.

His progression into the first team under Gerrard has arrived following an eye-catching pre-season performance, grabbing two assists during a 6-0 victory over Bury.

Middleton rose to prominence at Norwich having impressed for the under-23s regularly and after being named on the bench for the first team back in January 2017, aged just 17, when Alex Neil took a threadbare squad to Southampton for an FA Cup third round replay.

'Right from day one, he caught the eye. He came to Spain with us, continued to progress and impress. We saw glimpses,' McAllister continued, speaking to Rangers TV.

'He is a young player with power, pace, which is a big asset in today's football and he has a nice left leg as well.

'Knowing Rangers over the years, people who can play in wide areas can win the hearts of people in Scotland.

'We are known for producing wide players over the years and there is always something special when you see somebody in a wide area, just bursting past a defender and whipping a cross in.'
