Late England U21s cameo for James Maddison as Angus Gunn sits it out – and Jamal Lewis enjoys a dream debut

But it was a busier night for Canaries team-mate Jamal Lewis who had a dream debut with Northern Ireland.

Maddison came on in the 84th minute, replacing Tammy Abraham, but he made a big impression in a short time. Maddison had been on the pitch just a matter of seconds when he slid a right-foot shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Two minutes later he set up a chance for fellow sub Dominic Calvert-Lewin and repeated the trick a minute later, but on each occasion the Everton man's effort was off target.

Gunn was sidelined by what is thought to be a minor back injury and it is likely Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd is happy to rest them ahead pof Tuesday's game against Ukraine in Sheffield. The Young Lions are five points clear at the top of Group Four.

Gunn – Boothroyd's number one since Jordan Pickford moved to the senior set-up following Euro 2017 – missed training last week as did number two Freddie Woodman, with a hip injury, meaning England started with Shrewsbury keeper Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United.

Boothroyd said: 'We have a back and hip little issue with Angus and Freddie. Because they're both goalkeepers we've taken them out of the firing line, as a precaution. I'm hoping both will be fine.'

One City player who saw plenty of action on Saturday was full-back Lewis, who got his international career with Northern Ireland off to a perfect start.

Michael O'Neill's men were 2-1 winners over South Korea at Windsor Park and Lewis played the full 90 minutes, although it was fellow debutant Paul Smyth who was the hero when he came off the subs' bench to score the winner.
